"Helly was extremely professional and courteous.  She not only had many wonderful ideas but she presented them in a very sensitive and thoughtful way" - Mary Horton, Homeowner
 Kitchen Design

Kitchens of today have become the center of the home, where meals are prepared, homework is done, and decisions are made over coffee.

The modern kitchen often has all the amenities of a multipurpose room, including computer and TV cable access, work surfaces, perhaps a wine fridge, refrigerated snack drawers, or built in espresso machine. Everything you need for work and entertainment.

Kitchen Remodel

The average size kitchen should include the work triangle, where the refrigerator, stove, and sink are located in a triangle to minimize the walking distance to prepare a meal.

Larger kitchens may have work zones in addition to the work triangle. These zones would include areas for food storage, food prep and clean up.

The trends and styles have moved toward clean lines and elegant surfaces. Think of warm cherry wood paired with cool granite or rustic Natural hickory with urban concrete countertops. Stainless steel and brushed nickel are the most popular finishes for appliances, faucets, and hardware. Copper and bronze are quickly increasing in popularity with more options from manufacturers. Single bowl sinks, under mounted, or with an apron front are the most common in today’s kitchen.

"Helly, you ROCK! With the suggestions you made for our kitchen update, even going above and beyond to make sure we'd explored all of the countertop options within our budget, we've now got a beautiful living space. I'm not so sure I want to sell right away! Thanks for everything." - Eileen and Jeff, Homeowners

In Boulder county, where remodeling is common, taking down walls can open the kitchen to the living space but create new challenges such as traffic flow and aisle space. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has created design guidelines for kitchens that set the standards for such things as appropriate counter landing areas and distances from cooking surfaces to combustible surfaces.

There are 5 components to every kitchen remodel.

Style

Budget

Labor

Design

Materials

Style includes the look you want to have - traditional, modern, mountain cabin, urban loft, etc.

Budget is a real look at what it costs to remodel and what you can afford

Labor refers to the professionals you may need to help you reach your goals - designers, architects, contractors, etc.

The design of the Kitchen may be the most essential component of a successful project. You don’t want your refrigerator door banging into your island. This component alone presents a great reason to consult with an experienced kitchen designer who knows the guidelines and products and can space plan your design so you find problems before installation.

Kitchen Makeover

Materials are the final component (although it has been known for someone to fall in love with an oven and design a kitchen around it).

Materials include: Flooring, Cabinets, Appliances, Countertop & Backsplash, Faucet & sink, Lighting.

Whether you need a simple kitchen face lift, a complete remodel, or new construction, let Design Matters Home, an NKBA member, use our expertise and focus on our design matters (aesthetics, functionality, health, the earth, saving Money, future investment) to help you design a kitchen that meets the needs of you and your family.
