 Color Consulting

The colors of a room have a big effect on the way you feel so making sure they match your likes and needs is very important.Colors1

Whether you are starting a complete makeover of a room that will include new furnishings or wanting to bring out different feelings in a room using your existing furnishings -

Design Matters Home can help!

We like to start by providing 3 color scheme suggestions based on your likes, dislikes, needs, current room colors and furnishings, and future plans.

Color2

We will incorporate new color trends and will take into account the layout of your home to determine where accent walls are appropriate, where to break colors in open floor plans, and what color trim and ceiling colors best enhance the room.

After we present our initial suggestions we will continue to work with you until we are sure the right scheme is chosen that will create a balanced space that meets your specific color goals.

Color Psychology
Color3
Knowing a bit about the psychology of a color can help you get more insight into what you might be feeling in a current room or wanting in a makeover of a room.  Certain colors are good for certain rooms and certain colors are not.

• Light colors are expansive and airy, they make rooms seem larger and brighter.

• Dark colors are sophisticated and warm; they give large rooms a more intimate appearance.

RedRed

• Most emotionally intense color
• Raises blood pressure, speeds respiration and raises heart rate
• Lose track of time and raises appetite
• Color of love
• Red clothing gets noticed and makes wearer appear heavier
• Does not help with negotiations or confrontations

Interior Design for Red:
• Raises a room’s energy level living rooms and dining rooms – draws people together and stimulates conversation
• Entry way - creates a strong first impression
• Bedrooms – usually considered too stimulating for bedrooms, but if you’re only in the room after dark, you’ll be seeing it mostly by lamplight, when the color will appear muted, rich, and elegant.
• Many use only for accent color, but certain colors: certain shades like orange-red and brown-red may be muted; they are cozy, comforting earth colors like terra cottas, brick, and cinnabar
• Red is a powerful statement, so red furniture and accessories should be clean and in good condition since it will get more attention than a brown sofa.

YellowYellow
• Captures the joy of sunshine, cheerful, energetic, and communicates happiness.
• People lose their tempers in babies also seem to cry more in a yellow room.
• Creates feeling of frustration and anger in people due to fatiguing on eyes.
• Stimulate the nerves and purify the body?
• People are very opinionated about yellow, you love it or hate it.
• Enhances concentration hence used for legal pads?

Interior Design for Yellow:
• Kitchens, dining rooms, and bathrooms - happy color is energizing and uplifting.
• Kitchens – Speeds metabolism
• Halls, entries, and small spaces, yellow can feel expansive and welcoming.
• Not a good choice in main color schemes of a room – too much
• Buttery shades easier to live with than bright sunflower yellow.
• Vast range of yellows lends flexibility of use in decorating schemes.

Blue Blue
• Most popular color
• Brings down blood pressure and slows respiration and heart rate therefore calming, relaxing, clean, and serene
• Sky and Ocean
• Blue indicates loyalty so wear it to meetings

Interior Design for Blue:
• Bedrooms and bathrooms due to restful and relaxing. Careful: pastel blue can be chilly when it’s on the walls and furnishings, especially in a room that receives little natural light. If you opt for a light blue as the primary color in a room, balance it with warm hues in the furnishings
and fabrics.
• Productivity is higher in blue rooms: weight lifters can lift more in blue gyms.  Good for offices and kids study areas.
• Bathrooms and Laundry: Clean color
• Consider warmer blues, such as periwinkle, or bright blues, such as cerulean or turquoise to encourage relaxation in the rooms where people gather family rooms, living rooms, large kitchens.
• Can easily be main color of a room due to calming effect. Go for softer shades of blue.
• Dark blue has the opposite effect. Dark blue evokes feels of sadness. No dark blue main color scheme.

GreenGreen
• Considered the most restful color for the eye and can improve vision.
• Calming, refreshing color
• Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow
• Symbolizes nature

Interior Design for Green:
• Most popular decorating color due to calming effect; relieves stress by helping people relax
• Suited to almost any room in the house.
• Kitchen, a sage or medium green cools things down
• Family room or living room, it encourages unwinding but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness.

PurplePurple
• Color of royalty
• Luxury, wealth, sophistication, and creativity
• Mystery and spirituality

Interior Design for Purple:
• Darkest values (eggplant, for example) rich, dramatic, and sophisticated.
• Lighter versions, such as lavender and lilac, bring the same restful quality to bedrooms as blue does, but without the risk of feeling chilly.
• Can be very subtle and a very flexible neutral

OrangeOrange
• Excitement, enthusiasm and is an energetic color.
• Warm and welcoming
• Ancient cultures orange was used to heal the lungs and increase energy levels

Interior Design for Orange:
• Not a good idea for a living room or for bedrooms, great for an exercise room. It will bring all the emotions out that you need when jumping into your fitness routine.
• Melon, tangerine, and yellow-orange mango are bright, cheerful, and tend to improve appetite.
• Kitchens, breakfast nooks, and dining rooms, orange shades can be very comfortable.

BlackBlack
• Authority and power
• Makes people look thinner
• Stylish and timeless
• Implies submission: Priests wear it as a submission to God
