 Bathroom Design

Today’s bathrooms have been transformed from a utilitarian room down the hall to sanctuaries attached to a master suite. You will find coffee bars; massage therapy tubs, and walk-in showers with 9 different types of body sprays and even built in tanners!modern bathroom

Bathrooms have been getting bigger over the years but even the smallest baths are adding elements and materials to increase the dramatic, elegant impression.

There is something for everyone ranging from reproduction of period fixtures to modern styles and fixtures.

Spa themes and natural products have also come into the forefront recently.

Still the hardest working room in the house, color in the bath can make a big difference in your effect. Formal or casual, color can set the calming or exciting mood you desire.

Even though a bathroom is one of the smallest rooms in your house, updating it can get complex before you know it primarily due to the wide range of options possible -

Bathroom Space Plan

• Two sinks or one?
• Cabinets or pedestals?
• Natural Stone, Porcelain, or Ceramic?
• Storage?
• Mirrors?
• Separate tub and shower?
• Brushed nickel or Oil Rubbed Bronze?
• Overhead lights or sconces?
• ADA (Americans with Disability Act) accessible or enclosed fixtures?
• Heated floors and towel racks?
• Windows and ventilation?
• Universal Design?

The main concept to keep in mind is functionality; Function is critical in all surfaces and materials of the bath.  The NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) has created an encyclopedia of guidelines for designing a bathroom that include distances between fixtures, lighting heights, exhaust systems, door way clearances and other size standards.

Updated Bathroom

It’s a good idea to consult with a professional to ensure your job will be up to the current standards.  Another good reason to work with a professional designer for your bathroom project is to make sure you manage expenses properly.  It can cost more per square foot to remodel a bath than a kitchen.

Bathroom MakeoverWhether you need a simple bathroom face lift, a complete remodel, or new construction, let Design Matters Home, an NKBA member, use our expertise and focus on our design matters (aesthetics, functionality, health, the earth, saving Money, future investment) to help you design a bathroom that meets the needs of you and your family.
